Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before you drive

Booking

Understanding how to reserve a vehicle, what information you need, and what happens after you submit your booking request.

How do I book a vehicle with 4Drive UAE?

Enter your pickup location, dates, and times on the homepage. Browse available vehicles, compare specifications and terms, then click Book Now on your chosen option. Fill in driver details, review the booking summary, and pay the advance online with a debit or credit card. You will receive a voucher by email within minutes containing the local rental company contact details and pickup instructions.

Can I modify my search dates after I start browsing?

Yes. Use the search panel at the top of any page to adjust pickup and return dates, times, or locations. The system will refresh results to match your new criteria. No need to start from scratch.

What details do I need to provide when booking?

Full name as it appears on your driving licence, email address, phone number with country code, flight details if picking up at an airport, and a valid payment card for the booking advance. Additional driver information can be added at pickup for an extra fee.

Payment and Advance

How the payment process works, what you pay online, and what you settle later when collecting the vehicle.

What is the booking advance and how much do I pay online?

The booking advance is a portion of the total amount paid online by card when you confirm your reservation. The exact advance amount is shown clearly during checkout before you submit payment. The remaining balance is settled when you collect the vehicle. This split-payment structure is standard across our service.

What payment methods are accepted for the balance at pickup?

Payment methods for the remaining balance depend on the specific vehicle you have booked. Options typically include debit card, credit card, or cash. The accepted methods for your booking are listed clearly in the vehicle terms during selection and confirmed in your voucher. Check your voucher before arrival. More information is available on our payment methods page.

Can I pay the full amount online?

No. The system requires an advance payment online to secure your booking, and the balance is always collected by the local rental company at pickup. This arrangement ensures flexibility in payment options when you arrive.

Deposit and Credit Card

Security deposits, card blocks, excess liability, and what happens if you do not have a credit card.

Do I need a credit card to rent a vehicle?

It depends on the vehicle. Some options accept debit cards, others require a credit card for the security deposit block. The card requirement is clearly stated in the vehicle details when you search and appears again in your voucher. If you only have a debit card, filter results to show vehicles that accept it, or contact your bank to increase your card limit temporarily.

What is a security deposit and how does it work?

A security deposit is a temporary hold placed on your card by the rental company at pickup. It covers potential damage, traffic fines, or fuel shortages. The amount varies by vehicle and is shown in the terms. The hold is released after you return the vehicle undamaged and all charges are settled, usually within 14 to 30 days depending on your card issuer.

Are there vehicles available without a deposit requirement?

Yes. We offer a selection of vehicles with no security deposit required at pickup. These are clearly marked during your search. Keep in mind that excess liability and damage responsibility still apply according to the terms of your agreement signed at pickup.

Documents and Age

Driving licences, age limits, international permits, and what paperwork you must bring to collect your vehicle.

What documents do I need to pick up my vehicle?

A valid driving licence held for at least one year, your passport with a valid entry stamp or residency visa, the payment card used for the booking advance, and the voucher sent to your email. If your licence is not in English or Arabic, an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended. Some rental companies may require it.

Can I drive in the UAE with a foreign licence?

Tourists can drive on a foreign licence for up to three months from entry. While an IDP is not strictly mandatory by law, rental companies often ask for one if your licence is not in English or Arabic. We recommend obtaining an IDP before you travel to avoid complications at pickup.

What is the minimum age to rent a vehicle?

Minimum age varies by vehicle type. Most standard cars require the driver to be at least 21 years old. Larger SUVs, luxury models, and high-performance vehicles often require drivers to be 25 or older. The age requirement is stated in each vehicle listing and in your voucher.

Pickup and Return

Where and when you collect your vehicle, delivery options, inspections, and the return process.

Where do I pick up my vehicle?

Pickup location depends on the rental company assigned to your booking. Common options include a desk at the airport terminal, a counter near the airport, or delivery directly to your hotel in Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, or other emirates. Full address and contact details are provided in your voucher once your booking is confirmed.

What should I check during the vehicle inspection?

Walk around the vehicle with the rental company representative. Check bodywork, glass, tyres, lights, and interior condition. Any existing damage must be recorded in the rental agreement you sign at pickup. Take photos or videos on your phone as your own record. This protects you when you return the vehicle.

Can I return the vehicle outside office hours?

Some rental companies offer after-hours return with key drop-off. Availability and any associated fee depend on the company and location. Check your voucher or contact the rental company directly using the details provided in your booking confirmation.

Driving in UAE

Rules of the road, speed limits, toll systems, fuel stations, cross-border travel, and practical tips for driving locally.

What are the speed limits and traffic rules?

Urban roads have limits of 60 to 80 km/h. Sheikh Zayed Road allows 100 km/h in most sections. Motorways between emirates permit 120 to 140 km/h. Speed cameras are widespread and fines are issued automatically. Drive on the right, overtake on the left, and always wear a seat belt. Mobile phone use while driving is prohibited unless hands-free.

How do tolls work in the UAE?

Dubai uses the Salik electronic toll system. Gates are located on Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Maktoum Bridge. Each crossing is charged automatically to the vehicle account, and you pay toll costs when you return the vehicle. Some rental companies offer Salik toll tag registration as an optional service for convenience. Abu Dhabi bridges have manual toll booths where you pay cash or card.

Can I drive my rental vehicle to Oman?

Cross-border travel to Oman requires a written permit from the rental company arranged in advance. Not all companies or vehicles allow cross-border trips. If you plan to visit destinations like Musandam or Muscat, mention this when you contact us or check vehicle terms before booking. Additional documentation and insurance fees apply.

Changes and Cancellation

Modifying your booking, cancellation policies, refunds, and what to do if your plans change.

Can I change my booking dates after confirmation?

Changes depend on the rental company terms and availability. Contact us at [email protected] as soon as possible with your booking reference. We will check with the rental company whether your new dates can be accommodated. Some changes may incur fees or require rebooking.

What is the cancellation policy?

Cancellation terms vary by vehicle and rental company. Most bookings allow free cancellation up to 48 hours before pickup. Late cancellations or no-shows may result in partial or full forfeiture of the advance paid. Specific terms are included in your voucher and displayed during checkout.
